Manuel Reyes was born in Jayena (Granada) on 18 July 1934. He began playing flamenco guitar at an early age. Later, fascinated by the instrument, he began restoring his first flamenco guitars, learning guitar making by himself. He built his first guitar, but was not satisfied with the result and sought out a luthier who could give him some advice. That's how he met Joaquín Sanchez Galisteo, who took him on as an apprentice. In 1949, Manuel Reyes opened his own workshop in Cordoba. And so, over the years, Manuel Reyes became one of the biggest names in guitar making, first in Spain and then internationally. Manuel Reyes died in 2014 in his adopted hometown of Cordoba, where he had worked all his life. His name has now been added to the list of the great luthiers who have built the history of this instrument, and who, since Antonio de Torres, have given this instrument the very best it could produce.
This beautiful guitar was built in 1984, and is one of the very few ‘classical’ guitars built by this luthier. It has remained in perfect condition, with no cracks or repairs. The aesthetics are superb, the woods are of the highest quality and the craftsmanship is worthy of this luthier's reputation. The sound is breathtakingly beautiful. The notes are long and have a very particular resonance and expressiveness, producing a moving gravity, emotion and depth. It's as if we've rediscovered in its musicality the cante jondo of flamenco, the chant that originally, in the middle of the 19th century, in this same region of Andalusia gave birth to this instrument. An exceptional instrument built by one of the greatest luthiers of the 20th century.
