Fabio Zontini was born in Milan in 1971. He graduated as a master luthier-restorer from the Civica Scuola di Liuteria di Milano in 1996. Now based in Calizzano, he has made over 250 instruments. The masters of historical guitar making: Torres, Simplicio, Hauser etc. have been a source of inspiration and have contributed to developing his way of conceiving sound and aesthetics. In 2007, he carried out an in-depth study of Torres' guitars at Barcelona's Museu de la Música: the Miguel Llobet guitar (1859) and the famous “Papier Mâché” FE14 guitar built in 1862.
This guitar is a magnificent papier-mâché reproduction of the Torres FE14. With this instrument, Fabio Zontini demonstrates his talent for crafting and using papier-mâché for the back and sides, just as Torres did. The aesthetics are superb, insofar as the luthier reproduces the aged appearance of the instrument without falling into cliché. Soundwise, the result is breathtaking, with round, heavy basses and vibrant, expressive highs. The timbre of 19th- and early 20th-century instruments can be heard. This guitar offers a unique experience and a voyage back in time, representing a fine homage to the history of the guitar and to the genius who gave birth to this instrument.
